This is Sullivan. We met in Santa Monica, on the pier. Sullivan was an animated character, and very friendly! It was fun talking with him, and he had an interesting story to tell.

First, he describes himself as half Islandic, half Black. He just recently got released, after spending thirteen years in California State Prison, for home invasion and robbery. But here is an example where the system worked. He now runs his own business, in Real Estate and Insurance.

Sullivan tells of his military background. As he put it, he spent five years in the Army, then went into the Navy, and then into Prison. I jokingly asked which was worse, and he laughingly said, without hesitation, "Prison."

Despite his loss of freedom for the past thirteen years, he seems to have a very positive outlook now. I am glad to have met someone who was able to turn their life around in such a positive manner, and I wish him the best of luck in his future!

This is Sumore, and her puppy, Boris Rasputin.

I met Sumore on a Wednesday evening, just at sunset, on the Santa Monica Pier. While doing a project for my photography class, I also started my 100 Strangers project, meeting Stranger #1

Sumore is from Bermuda, and she lives in Long Beach, California now. What attracted me to take Sumore’s portrait was at first her artful tatoo, and then her adorable puppy. We talked about her puppy, of whom she is very proud, and very fond of.

Boris is a nine-week old "Super Mini Terrier." During our chat, she referred to him as "teacup." I asked what that meant, and she said it was that he was so tiny, he could almost fit inside a teacup!

It was very nice meeting Sumore, who, as you can see in the picture above, is very pretty, has a great smile, and was very friendly. It was nice meeting you!

Technical Info:

This was taken just after sunset, with a Canon 40D mounted on a tripod, at 1/30 second shutter, using both existing light and a fill-flash.
